Meet Jim Collier
Author, Educator, Advocate, Storyteller
When I’m not engaged in RetirED activities, I’m doing the following:
— Enjoying the great outdoors of Colorado—usually steps from our home in Larkspur, Colorado. Our English cream golden retriever, Jazzman, is our self-appointed “property wildlife manager.”
— Spending time reliving my childhood with my tutors of imagination—my grandchildren, Hayden and London—who affectionately call me “Papa Jim Jim.”
— Traveling to remote playgrounds (tropical beaches) for some quality recess time with the love of my life and wife, Carol, a retired registered nurse.
My Other Retirement Recess interests include:
Being a children’s book author of The World Was Flat, published in 2016. It’s a book that illustrates how the power of belief can shape your world. All proceeds from the sale of this book benefit Jessie’s Heart charity.
Being a local writer of a monthly article entitled “Bear Wise” for my hometown newspaper, the Perry Park Sentinel (2010–current). Written from a Bear’s perspective, the purpose of these articles is to educate local residents in a humorous way on how to better coexist in bear country. As Beary Bear often says, “Black bears matter.”
Fund-raising and writing articles for the charity I founded in 2002, “Jessie’s Heart Fund,” Children’s Hospital, Colorado. Jessie’s Heart Fund, now Jessie’s Heart, is a nonprofit charity that raises money to aid families with children who are being treated for congenital heart conditions. The charity is named in memory of our daughter, Jessica, who passed at just twenty-two months old from a congenital heart condition.
Running, lately at more of a jogging speed. I began running at age forty-six to improve my physical, emotional, and spiritual life. Prior, I led a sedentary life and smoked a pack of cigarettes a day. Within the first decade that followed, I entered and completed many 10Ks, six marathons, and two half marathons, including one on the Great Wall of China in 2008. My running motto is this: “I may not be the fastest guy on the course, but I always finish.”
“Go confidently in the direction of your dreams, live the life you have imagined.” – Thoreau
